Medicare Part A covers your hospital care and your hospice care. After a deductible ($1,364 in 2019) Medicare pays 100% of your costs in the hospital for the first 60 days. Days 61-90 you are responsible for coinsurance of $341/day, Medicare then pays the rest. Days 91-150 you are responsible for coinsurance of $682/day and Medicare will pay the rest. If you need blood, you are responsible for the cost of the first 3 pints, then Medicare pays for the rest.

Medicare Part A also covers your Skilled Nursing Facility Care. This is typically known as a ‘Rehab Facility’ and you would typically go here after you were discharged from a hospital. To be clear, Medicare Part A DOES NOT cover Nursing Homes or any sort of assisted living residence. However, Medicare does pay 100% of the costs while you are at the Skilled Nursing Facility for the first 20 days. After that, you have a coinsurance payment of $170.50/day, and Medicare Part A will pay the rest for days 21-100.

Lastly Medicare Part A covers Hospice Care. Medicare will pay for all but $5 of your prescriptions while on Hospice Care and all but 5% of the costs for Inpatient Respite Care.

Medicare Supplement plans are designed to pick up right where Medicare leaves off; that is, many of the plans pay some or all of your Part A Deductible, your extended stay co-insurance payments (days 61-150+), the cost of blood, etc. Supplemental plans are generally standardized but some may vary slightly state by state.
